This video is showing you what is happening when your hard drive is making that “beeping” or terrible screeching noise!
This particular model is a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 250GB 2.5″ SATA drive from a Dell Latitude d630.
The beeping sound comes from the heads being damaged such that they stop the platter from spinning up. Once the heads are put in the rest position, you can see what happens when you are hearing that terrible screeching noise. If you value the data on your hard drive, do NOT keep spinning it up like this as you will scratch the disc and may lose data recoverability.
I hope this video helps people who have faulty hard drives that are still covered by warranty – you don’t have to void the warranty by removing the sealed screw! If your drive is out of warranty, you now have a few options – attempt to replace reader arm/heads, take it to a data recovery place, trash it completely or use the other components for your geeky electronic projects! The stepper motor and the rare Earth magnets in the moon shaped metal are fun to play with!
Take care guys,
